How Big Autistic People's Heads Are

We got a comment telling us that there is a theory that Autistic people's heads are bigger than people who don't have autism. And that's what the blog is for, if you guys ask us a question then we'll have an answer and we will have more information for our project. So please post more questions and I think we've been getting quite a lot lately. We did some research and we think we have the answer. It is true that autistic people's brain are 5%-10% larger than our brains. But that isn't true for all of them. MOST of them have bigger heads. It's very interesting. They usually have a normal size head during the first year of life but after the first 12 months their heads start growing very fast. Hope that answers your question Adelaine. Symptoms

The symptoms of Autism start within the first three years of life near infancy. At infancy it can be hard to notice the symptoms but there are many of them that can be very easily noticed. They usually have an obsession. Something they really love. Like a blanket, or stuffed animal, or favorite toy. They also usually like to have a routine, So they do the same thing everyday and if it gets interuppted it could lead to a temper tantrum. ( I have a post on that. ) They have problems communicating depending on how severe their autism is. They may not even speak at all until they grow older. They also have some trouble socializing.Like making friends, they usually like to be alone. They may not make eye contact with you or realize how your feeling. They have problems reading emotions. How do I deal with the Tantrums?

Autistic cildren do have temper tantrums and there are different ways to deal with it. Autistic children can get mad over the tiniest thing and when they get mad they are MAD. They can start crying, screaming, kicking, fall to the floor all because you turned off the T.V. at their favorite show or your out of popsicles. It's the little things that get them mad and there are ways to stop it. You can ignore them and not give them the attention they want, which can work either way. They could continuously go on with a tantrum or stop and realize you're not listening. But more than likely they'll keep on going because when they want something they are determined to get it. You can also bribe them which is what we used to do with my sister. We had a bin labeled "Rienforcments" full of my sister's favorite candy, SMARTIES. So when she threw a tantrum we would show her the candy and she would stop and we would give it to her. And you can bribe them with different objects not just candy, may-be their favorite toy, or video game. Pretty much whatever they like. Post us if you have questions. THANKS!

What is Autism?

Autism is a very complex discorder that affects the social part of the brain. It's not contagious so you can't get it unless you already have it. It's not something that'll kill you, it's more like a disability. Autistic children can have some problems communicating or socialing, like making friends, depending on how severe their autism is. Boys are more likely to get autism in comparisin to girls. But just because you have doesn't mean your dumb there are some autistic people called autistic savants who are very intellegent in one certain subject. Autism can affect a person's ability tro communiate so they take special classes whether it's a Special Ed program at a school, or therapy at home, or a guidance counsler. They're all very helpful. And like I posted on the blog, I said that meeting people like yourself is the best. Whether you're the autisc person yourselfor, a parent, friend, or sibling. It's nice to meet people who understand what you're going through and to know that it's normal to feel the way you do. It's just nice to know you're not the only person in the world who has to deal with all of it.

Our names are Paula DeAnda and Anusha De. We are both fifth graders in Houston, Texas at Roberts Elementary. In our school, we do a project called Exhibition, which is about becoming an expert on any one topic and then taking an action on it. Our topic is autism, and as part of our action, we created this blog for people to ask questions about autism.
